Achieving successful weight loss and maintaining your health can help you feel better about yourself and improve your quality of life. One of the key points we emphasize at our medical weight loss centers in Sacramento and Roseville is proper nutrition through our diet plans and nutritional supplements. We have provided detailed information about fats, proteins, and carbohydrates to help you understand your body chemistry and how different foods affect your weight loss and overall health.
At our medical weight loss clinics in Sacramento and Roseville, we teach our patients that moderate fat intake is necessary for good health. Fats are found in both plant and animal sources and contain more calories than proteins and carbohydrates.
Low-fat diets are based on the premise that cutting fat from the diet and increasing carbohydrates will lower caloric intake and cause weight loss. Although this may work for a short period of time, a low-fat diet can cause the body to lose muscle, become deficient in essential fatty acids, and store carbohydrates as fat.
For weight loss and long-term weight control, we encourage a moderate intake of good fat coupled with adequate protein and mostly low-glycemic carbohydrates.
At The Center for Weight Management, we design a medical weight loss diet plan specifically for you, so you know exactly which food choices will help you reach your goal.

Protein in the diet serves as a source of amino acids. Some amino acids are essential because they cannot be manufactured in the body, while others are nonessential since the human body can produce them. The 11 essential fatty acids are all found in animal protein, which makes meat, eggs, and dairy the best forms of protein. Vegetable proteins do not contain all 11 essential amino acids.
Vegetable proteins are incomplete, and often come with a large carbohydrate burden. As a result, limiting protein intake to primarily vegetable sources typically requires a higher caloric intake, which makes it difficult to lose weight and get enough essential amino acids.
Our medical weight loss programs teach patients about the important metabolic functions that proteins serve. Insufficient protein intake prevents efficient carbohydrate burning. Additionally, consuming too little protein when dieting can lead to muscle loss and slow down the body’s ability to burn calories, which slows down weight loss.

Carbohydrates are organic chemicals found in vegetable sources; animal food sources have virtually no carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are found in sugars, fruits, vegetables, and food made from grains, including breads. The large amount of carbohydrates in the common diet is a major factor in the rising levels of obesity and diabetes in children and adults today.
Carbohydrate-containing foods vary in the amount they increase blood sugar. High glycemic foods produce a rapid increase in blood sugar, which raises insulin levels and can contribute to the development of diabetes. Our medical weight loss programs in Sacramento and Roseville teach patients to use the Glycemic Index to select the proper carbohydrates and know how much of them to eat. Selecting the right carbohydrates in the right amount is important to achieve proper chemical balance in the diet.
