Columbia University’s medical school, the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) in New York, offered Dr. Hendricks a scholarship. He accepted and moved to New York City. His scholarship didn't pay for room and board, so he worked all four years at P&S as an evening librarian at a hospital in the medical center and as a laboratory technician.
