About Mia Hendricks & The Smart Girl Way

Weight Loss Solutions

I am a student in a northern California high school where most girls seem to be stressed about either their weight or appearance or both and, unfortunately, fear they are judged by these as well. Comments such as "Am I fat? Do I look ugly? Am I as pretty as she? I really want to lose 5 pounds. My clothes are ugly. She is pretty and smart! Why do I have acne, and she doesn’t?" are heard daily in my high school. Today’s girls are obsessed with perfectionism. If only girls could feel good about themselves, accept who they are, and not get caught up in the material world.

Portrait of Mia Hendricks

I have been fortunate enough to grow up in a family of nutritional professionals. My father, Ed Hendricks, is a physician who specializes in obesity medicine (Bariatrics) and my mother, Paula, is a certified nutritionist and wellness consultant. Together they have been helping people with weight and health issues for over 20 years now. I have been learning how to eat right, stay healthy and be fit for as long as I can remember.

It hasn’t always been easy. There is a lot of pressure to do the right thing and make the right choices – and sometimes I just want to be like everyone else, hanging out with friends munching on chips, cookies, pizza, fries, and buying food from the cafeteria or vending machine at lunch. Now that I am a teenager and can make my own choices, my knowledge has helped me stay focused and on track to eat and exercise the Smart Girl Way. I have learned to not get caught up in crazy diets that I see others trying and to not follow the pack for the sake of fitting in. This does, however, require work and attention.

I am not perfect. I am not naturally slender and I can’t eat whatever I want like a few girls can without gaining weight. I just try to make Smart Girl choices through exercise, eating right, staying focused on academics and being true to myself. I try not to worry about what others think about me, what I look like, what I eat or what I wear. I don’t strive to have a "perfect" body, "perfect" hair, or wear the "perfect" outfit. I focus on doing the best I can for me, for my body, for my mind, The Smart Girl Way.

When I am out with friends, or at school, I see how teens are eating and find that although what some eat may be delicious, it can also be unhealthy for the body. My friends in turn see what I’m eating and want to know why they should eat the way I do. Their questions have inspired me to share my knowledge with teen girls while I’m in school through a website I created called www.TheSmartGirlWay.com.

I hope girls will find this website helpful in learning about Smart Girl eating habits. The website includes tips, recipes, and advice from nutrition and exercise experts. I will post interviews with teens about their struggles with weight and exercise and how they are trying to make Smart Girl choices. I will post blogs about what I am eating, what we are cooking at home, my exercise and fitness routine, and how I am dealing with teenage stress – when I am not bogged down with too much homework.

Let’s keep each other motivated. I welcome suggestions and ideas about how girls can deal with daily challenges, what girls are doing to achieve happiness and health for themselves, their body and their brain. Visit my site, www.TheSmartGirlWay.com to learn more. If you have any questions, I will try to answer them.
